The illustration is based on a battle occurred in 1340 in Umbria, near the town of Terni, and under a watch tower of the city. In the clash we can see the papal troops, surrounded by Terni Ghibellines, who were the majority in the city. They had taken possession of the city, they had forced the minority of citizens guelfi setting out the walls of the town. The battle ends with the defeat of Papal general Guigone of San Germano and the victory of the Terni nobles. The skill and strategy of Terni is determined by a sudden incursion against Guigone's troops and a superior bellic organization.
